Helpful Ukrainians give Dunfanaghy Square a facelift

THE square in Dunfanaghy has been receiving a facelift courtesy of a group of Ukrainians who are resident in the area.

The team were busy on Tuesday repainting the metalwork on the railings, benches, bollards, and signboards, which had been badly tarnished.

The operation was organised by Dunfanaghy Tidy Towns, which provided tins of black paint and brushes, and is part of the organisation’s programme to improve the appearance of the village.

The three painters are Ludmilla Sharko, Elya Khyrstenka and her husband Aleksandr, who are among a number of Ukrainians who settled in the Dunfanaghy area last September.

Diana Walford, chair of Dunfanaghy Tidy Towns, said the Ukrainians were keen to assist with the painting.

“They have done a very professional job.

“They are enjoying being part of the community and have been made to feel welcome here,” she said. As they worked away there was an opportunity for them to chat with local people and tourists, including a couple from Germany.

Their elevenses refreshments were kindly provided by Cafe Revive in the square.

Elya, one of the painters, said they were pleased to be able to help Tidy Towns in their ongoing efforts to make the square look a little smarter.

“Thanks to Tidy Towns for involving us,” she said.

Last month, the Ukrainians were involved in a Tidy Towns tree-planting programme on the verge of the N56 close to Dunfanaghy Golf Club.
