FINN Harps star Eloka Asoukah will feature on TG4 this evening as part of Eire Nua, a new series exploring Ireland’s growing multiculturism.

Over the summer and with foreign travel out of the question presenter Hector Ó hEochagáin hit the road to seek out those from overseas who have made Ireland their home.

From Brazil to the Congo, Canada to Ghana, Russia to Syria, the TG4 host sought answers to questions like who they are, why they came, how they have settled in and how Ireland has treated them.

In tonight’s episode, which goes out at 9.30pm, Hector puts his soccer skills to the test at Finn Harps with Nigerian born Eloka Asoukah or Luca as he is known locally.

Luca tells Hector how he felt when he arrived to play for Finn Harps.

“When I met the players these guys showed me love. I felt something different, seen the kindness of people.”

On the topic of soccer in Ballybofey, the footballer adds “I think it unites this community, especially the kids.”

There will be a second Donegal connection to tonight’s episode in former Indian Test cricketer Bobby Rao who finished his playing career with St Johnston.

In more recent times Bobby has been instrumental in helping Letterkenny Cricket Club to cup and league success.

Ahead of tonight’s episode Hector told the Donegal News how Eire Nua came about.

“Ireland has become so multi-cultural and it is changing all the time. But do we really know the people who walk by us in the street? How hard is it for someone who comes to this country without speaking English? How hard is it for someone to come here looking for a better life? All we want in this world is to have a nice life – to put food on the table and make sure our children have an education.

“An awful lot of people coming here are seeking refuge but Irish people have been refugees for hundreds of years. We were seeking refuge in America when people had to leave Donegal and Strabane and Kilkenny.

“The dynamic of this country has changed, we are a multi-cultural society and I think if you go into a classroom in Ireland anywhere today you will see that it’s not just Irish kids. And they are adding colour, they are adding life, they are adding so much to the community,” the television presenter added.
