Harps begin life without Murphy with win in Athlone

Athlone Town 0 Finn Harps 1

Gavin Gilmore’s late goal made the difference as Finn Harps began life without Darren Murphy with a 1-0 win over Athlone Town.

The Harps had a golden chance in the opening five minutes as Gavin Hodgins went through 1-on-1 but ‘keeper Matthew Connor made a great foot save before Dylan Hand made a goal saving block from Dara McGuinness’ rebound.

Hodgins was a threat for the visitors but other than a save from David Aziaya to deny Kyle Robinson, neither goalkeeper was too troubled in the first half.

Hodgins had another great chance as he controlled a cross brilliantly but his shot was tame, while Declan McDaid had a he great chance but he scuffed his shot.

It looked like heading for a scoreless draw although the Harps had the better of the chances and it was two substitutes that combined as Gradi Lomboto found Gilmore on the right of the box and he took a touch before firing low into the far corner on 88 minutes to win the game.
