Hard to beat a coffee and a chat…

By Brian McDaid

Kathleen Bonner says she never thought in her wildest dreams she’d have a coffee trailer in Fintown.

It called ‘Yer man’s Coffee Cove’ and it’s the go-to location for tourists, locals and those who spend the working day on the road. It’s heading for three in the afternoon and the Coffee Cove’s signature banana bread has long sold out but the coffee is dam good.

Kathleen has a very bubbly American accent and enjoys the art of conversation. It’s the end of November and the sun has decided to shine on a crisp afternoon.

“Two days ago the wind and rain were that bad I thought the serving hatch door was going to take flight along with my coffee sign and head over Meenaroy!” she said.

Today the winter sun is lighting up the serving hatch. It’s the perfect day to capture Kathleen having a chat through the perspex window. She tells our roving photographer that even though her accent might throw many of her passing customers, Katheen Bonner is a Glenties girl that spent a good part of her adult life in America, before she convinced her American husband to come home with her.

She made banana bread for the original owner of the coffee trailer (Yer man’s Coffee Cove) before taking over the business in 2022. The aim is to open all year round, closing at four each evening.

As I head for Meenaroy and take a sip of my latte, I suddenly remember that I forgot to pay for it, and have to double back for another wee chat.

As I arrive back cars are pulling up and pulling away as the get their afternoon treat for the journey home.
