Hans the Donegal hedgehog released back into the wild

HANS the hedgehog, found trapped in a drain by a family earlier this year, has been re-released into the area where he was discovered.

Senior ISPCA Inspector Kevin McGinley rescued Hans, and brought the little hedgehog to the ISPCA Donegal Animal Rehabilitation Centre for rehabilitation.

The vet who assessed Hans determined he was suffering from hypothermia and treated him for a possible chest infection.

Hans was kept at the ISPCA Centre in Donegal for a number of weeks, during which time he completed a course of medication, and was monitored until he gained some weight and recovered his strength.

In August the brave Hans was returned to the large back garden where he was found, with all members of the family who helped rescue him watching.

The children in the family even made a “hedgehog hotel” for Hans – who they have renamed Spike – and promised to leave out food and a shallow bowl of water in hot weather to help him and other wildlife.

In the run up to Halloween, the ISPCA are reminding anyone lighting any bonfires to check for wildlife who are going into hibernation this time of year. It is important to check under wood piles, leaves or heavy brush. Some outdoor decorations such as face spider webs or string lights can snare wild animals, so be careful about hanging them outside.

Unfortunately stray animals can fall victim to abuse or cruel Halloween pranks. If you witness animal cruelty, notify your local Garda station immediately and contact the ISPCA National Animal Cruelty Helpline on 1890 515 515.

Report animal cruelty – ISPCA National Animal Cruelty Helpline on 1890 515 515 and in cases of emergencies, please contact your local Gardaí.
