DOE Amateur Swimming Club in Dunfanaghy has announced that all proceeds from its 2014 Annual New Year’s Day Swim will be donated to the mental health organisation Grow.

Grow is a nationwide voluntary network which helps people recover from all forms of mental illness. The organisation holds weekly meetings where members are supported in making healthy changes in their thinking and behaviour.

The concept is loosely based on the 12-step programme which forms the basis of the Alcoholics Anonymous concept and which Grow has adapted to support recovery from mental illness.

Grow North West Area Co-ordinator, Maria Whelan, said the organisation was grateful that the Doe Amateur Swimming Club had selected Grow.

“It is an opportunity to raise much needed funds for the organisation and, most importantly, it will raise awareness of Grow in the area and let people know that we are here to help if they are experiencing mental health difficulties,” Ms Whelan said.

The 2014 Doe Amateur Swimming Club Annual New Year’s Day Swim will take place at Marble Hill Beach, Dunfanaghy. Registration opens at 1pm, with the swim starting at 2pm. All swimmers are welcome and participants must be over nine years of age.

Cost of registration is €10. Alternatively, swimmers can opt to receive a sponsorship card. The registration fee will be waived where swimmers have received sponsorship. Sponsorship cards are available by contacting Annemarie Campbell on Mobile 086 350 2826.

Grow holds weekly meetings in Dungloe, Letterkenny, Buncrana, Stranorlar, Moville, Killybegs and Donegal town. All are welcome. See www.grow.ie for further details.
