by Louise Doyle

THE principal of Loreto Community School in Milford has said the go-ahead for a new two-storey building will allow the facility to “continue delivering the highest standards of education”.

Eleven general classrooms, special teaching rooms for science, art and business studies, offices, toilets, stores, plant room and first floor bridge link to the existing school building at Convent Road comprise the development.

“We are absolutely delighted to receive planning approval for our school extension. This development will provide much-needed space and facilities, allowing us to continue delivering the highest standards of education in a supportive and enriching environment for our students,” said Ms O’Connor.

“It is a fantastic step forward for our students, staff and parents and we are grateful to all those who have helped to get the project this far. We look forward to the next step which is to proceed to tender.”

Planning permission was lodged by the Board of Management of Loreto Community School in September 2024 for a new 1,951.2M2 two-storey school building.

A roof mounted photovoltaic panel system for compliance (with part L) of the building regulations and all associated site works, including new landscaping, external steps to existing grass play, and associated site development and service infrastructure works were also contained within the proposed plans.

Permission was given the go-ahead this week, with 12 conditions attached. Donegal County Council has requested that prior to the commencement of development, a construction management plan be submitted to the Planning Authority in respect of the phasing of works, the laying out of haul routes across the site, proper locations for the disposal of site/construction waste materials and restorative details for any temporary construction works including closure details for the temporary construction access, and the location of all site offices/buildings and parking accommodation for construction/site vehicles.

Hours of construction are to be between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturday, and shall exclude Sundays and all bank holidays.

In the interest of public safety, any damage to the adjoining public road or footpath during demolition work shall be repaired and made good by the applicant within one month of the completion of the demolition and construction of school to the satisfaction of the area roads engineer.

Furthermore, the applicant must ensure the set down areas along the frontage of the school are managed to prevent illegal parking on the public road.
