Graffiti in Letterkenny ‘getting out of hand’

by Kate Heaney

GRAFFITI in Letterkenny is ‘getting out of hand’ and is causing major problems for the Tidy Towns, according to Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh who raised the issue at this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny Municipal District.

Cllr Kavanagh said the message needs to go out that graffiti on property is an offence and makes people wary of an area.

“Graffiti is appearing in many areas of the town and it takes time and money to remove it. It is a major problem for the Tidy Towns

Committee and it damages their efforts,” he said.

“The message needs to go out that it is an offence. It makes people wary of an area. The council need to talk to Gardai and also look at CCTV footage. Whoever is doing this is doing the town no favour,” he added.

In response to Cllr Kavanagh’s motion the council executive responded that: “Council staff continue to remove graffiti from certain areas in Letterkenny.

There is a particular focus with graffiti on Road Signage.

Donegal County Council are also liasing with community groups regarding the removal of graffiti from private property. The Gardaí are being consulted regarding the prevention and recurrence of the graffiti”.
