THE big news from Tuesday night’s North West 10k AGM was the decision of long serving Chairperson Grace Boyle to step down as North West 10k Chairperson.

She had successfully led the organization for most of its 17-year history taking over from Charlie Kelly who was the first Chairperson when the new body was formed in 1996 following the end of the Rockhill 10k event.

The first North West 10k was staged on the May Bank Holiday of 1997. Since then 30 charities have benefited to a combined total of just over 656,000 euro.

Ms Boyle said it was time for a new face at the helm and she would be vacating the Chairperson’s role. The post is to be filled by her husband James who was unanimously elected to be the head of the organization for the 18th staging of the charity race and walk which will take place Sunday May 4th in Letterkenny.

Prior to the elections of officers Grace Boyle thanked the Gardai and the Red Cross for their continued support for the event.

“Without the support and advice of the Gardai it would not be possible to stage an event of this scale in Letterkenny. Sergeant Eunan Walsh and his team have been very helpful to the committee. Charlie Kerr who drew up the new safety statement for traffic management for the 10k has done a terrific job and the Community Centre have been very generous in putting their facilities at our disposal every year.”

She also paid tribute to the voluntary committee who give up a lot of their valuable time to ensure that the event raises huge money every year for very worthwhile charities. “The North West 10k is a great community event that brings the people of Letterkenny out because it staged in the town which has made it such a success over the years.” The committee thanked the outgoing Chairperson for her years of loyal service and work as Chairperson.
