Donegal TD and Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Finance Pearse Doherty has accused Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Lowry Independents of a massive failure on the Mercosur trade deal which was widely opposed by farmers.
Sinn Féin will also bring another motion to the Dáil next week demanding accountability on the issue.
“The Mercosur trade deal could and should have been stopped. The Irish government has failed in its duty and abandoned Irish farmers and our people.
“Despite having numerous opportunities to act in Ireland’s interests, they now claim they will vote against the deal – knowing it is already too late.
“The Taoiseach and Tánsiste know full well that the deal is already effectively secured at EU level – and that they helped make this happen,” Deputy Doherty said today.
“While Sinn Féin raised these concerns again and again, the Government adopted a posture of passivity – watching, waiting, and shrugging as the deal moved closer to being completed.
“Sinn Féin will be bringing another motion to the Dáil next week demanding accountability and that the government set out what they plan to do next regarding this issue.
“We will continue to stand with farmers, united against this disastrous deal and the government’s failure to act. We will keep fighting for what’s best for Ireland,” Deputy Doherty added.
