A GORTAHORK resident who missed Donegal so much will living in Los Angeles has set up ‘Errigal Cam’ to help those living abroad cope with homesickness.
Sean Collins set up ‘Errigal Cam’ which records a live stream of Errigal from his kitchen window in Gortahork.
In the past two weeks, 300 people from all over the world have logged.
Sean is a nature photographer with a particular interest in birds and is a regular contributor for the Ballyness Bay Group.
He starts the video around 8am and turns it off when it gets dark, and in the summer time, he plans to let the video run all the time.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Sean said: “We were in LA for six years but I really missed Ireland so I decided to put a live camera out the kitchen window and pointed it towards Errigal mountain so people who are away can see the area.
“I take one photo of the Errigal Cam stream every four seconds so at the end of the day there are about 12,000 pictures.
“I then make a Time-lapse HD video at 30 frames a second so the day can be viewed in the space of about two minutes. It’s interesting because every day is different.
“The broadband and cameras have improved so streaming live in high definition means it is a good quality stream,” said Sean.
Sean is originally from Glasgow but has been living in Donegal for 35 years – bar his stint in LA. He returned to Donegal last Christmas with his wife, LA native Rachel and his daughter Sarah.
Sarah is following in her father’s footsteps with an interest in photography and videos as she creates fan videos on Tik Tok and one of her videos has had over one million views.
Sean is hopeful his new project will help showcase the beauty of the county but also help those from Donegal people who are away.
Sean continued, “Donegal is home for us now and we won’t be making a permanent return to LA anytime soon.
“The pandemic was very tough out there and we are glad to be home.
“Rachel and I got married about ten years before we moved to LA so she had lived in Donegal for over ten years so this is her home now too. I wish I had this when I was away so I could see what was going on in Ireland particularly in Donegal,” said Sean.
