A Gortahork man was fined €500 at Falcarragh District Court after being charged with driving a vehicle without insurance.
Michael Martin McGee was stopped by Gardai at Magheraoarty on May 9 last year and had been asked to produce his insurance or a certificate of exemption at a Garda Station within ten days but failed to do so.
Defending solicitor, Frank Dorrian, told the court his client had been on a “short errand” on the day in question after having received a call that there was a problem with the water supply for his animals.
“He was driving to a field in a rural area in a pick-up jeep at the time he was stopped,” Mr Dorrian indicated.
Defendant, with an address at Magheraroarty, had immediately set about rectifying the matter by dealing with the insurance company. His client, who had no previous convictions, worked in construction in England.
Imposing a fine of €500, Judge Emile Daly said he needed to be insured when he was driving while in Ireland. She allowed him four months to pay the fine and opted not to disqualify him.
