Gortahork begins to heal

by Evelyn Cullen

HURT, traumatised and heartbroken in the aftermath of the road collision on February 28 that tragically claimed the lives of young men Shaun Martin McClafferty (17) and Jamie Diver (23), the small, rural community of Gortahork gathered in Óstán Loch Altan on Friday evening in a quiet but powerful attempt to begin healing.

The ‘Stronger Together’ event was organised by local man Joe Mangan with the support of Road Victim Support Northern Ireland-Donegal (RVSNI), a newly launched charity dedicated to helping the families and friends left behind after fatal road accidents in County Donegal and Northern Ireland.

“We see people hurting, especially the young people. They have been traumatised by losing their friends in such terrible circumstances,” Joe explained.

“So we decided to try to do something to help them.”

The event took the form of an open and deeply emotional evening of story-sharing, where several committee members from RVSNI stood up and bravely told their own heartbreaking experiences of losing loved ones in road traffic accidents. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
