SFAI UNDER 12 NATIONAL CUP 3rd ROUND
Glencar 3 – 2 Swilly Rovers (aet)

Glencar have now qualified for the 4th round of the National Cup and waiting for them is an away match to Bonagee United on the weekend of 23rd/24th November after they came through this pulsating game against Swilly Rovers.

Played at the Aura Centre in which the pitch was in great condition, the home team had the Swilly team under pressure from kick off with Marty Duffy testing Kyle Burns in the away side’s goal. Further efforts from Eoin Dowling and Duffy again with both going narrowly wide.

Swilly were defending well and had striker Jay Curran playing up front on his own in which he had an outstanding game tormenting the home side’s defence. Glencar took the lead on the stroke of half time when a Dowling free kick was met by the head of Oran Brogan to score.

Just 2 minutes into the secnd half, the swilly keeper Burns kept his side in the game with a save from goal scorer Brogan. The Ramelton side then began to take control and from a short corner Clive Callan had a strike from 30 yards just wide.

Minutes later Joel Gorman cleared off the line from Dylan Dorrian. On 49 minutes Matthew Noonan then saved from Dorrian again but could do nothing when a shot from Matthew McLaughlin went through a crowded goalmouth to level the tie.

With three minutes of normal time left, Callan’s shot was cleared off the line and Glencar held on. Marty Duffy scored after 6 minutes of extra time and followed up with a goal that deserved to win this tie when he beat three players and slotted home.

But the never-say-die of this young Swilly side who kept playing their short passing game and got back into the match with a few minutes left when Dylan Dorrian scored from a penalty after a handball to leave the minimum between the sides.

For anyone who witnessed this game must have been impressed with both sides and the entertainment value was second to none. It was impossible to pick any individual as they all played their part in a fantastic game. Also praise must be given to the young referee Kevin McAree from Inishowen who also had an outstanding game.
