German town bestows top award on Letterkenny man

A LETTERKENNY man who was the driving force behind the town’s twinning with Rudolstadt has been recognised with a prestigious accolade.

Karol Kerrane was presented with an Honorary Officer Award for the part he played in securing the hugely successful partnership that has grown up between his native Donegal and the German town he has called home for over a decade.

Presenting him with his award in Rudolstadt’s famous Schillerhaus, the town’s Mayor, Jörg Reichl, described Karol Kerrane as a “bridge builder” and someone who continues to play a pivotal role in local society.

Mayor Reichl told those gathered, “Karol has been actively involved in our German-Irish partnership, acting as a source of ideas as well as being co-organiser of the St Patrick’s Weekend Festival in Rudolstadt which celebrates and strengthens our two communities each March.

“In addition he plays a key role in supporting our school partnerships.

“As founder of the Letterkenny Irish Pub he brought Irish pub culture to Rudolstadt, thus creating another honourable tradition of our town twinning.

“Karol provides helpful support to our town and its institutions in all matters relating to the town twinning. He regularly contributes valuable ideas and inspiration to the Rudolstadt-Letterkenny Town Twinning Advisory Board.

“Through his tireless efforts, he has not only stabilised the link between Rudolstadt and Letterkenny, but also brought it to life,” Mayor Reichl added.
