Is it only women who can see invisible walls? It would appear so. A video launched by the EU graphically shows the ‘invisible walls’ facing women who wish to succeed in business, or indeed any walk of life.
The video is part of a campaign to draw attention to gender imbalance in the workplace and in politics, to name but two.
Several initiatives are underway to tackle the problem, although the EU has pointed out that each individual country is largely responsible for gender balance in power making fields.
The European Commission has proposed legislation with the aim of attaining a 40% objective of the under-represented sex in non-executive board-member positions in publicly listed companies, with the exception of small and medium enterprises. The aim of this new legislation is to accelerate progress towards a better gender balance on the corporate boards of European companies.
The EU has also launched a new programme called Equality Pays Off. It aims at supporting the efforts of companies in tackling one of the major challenges of the future – skills shortage – by promoting equality between men and women, thereby reducing the gender pay gap.
