Gardaí warn of scam callers posing as broadband company

GARDAÍ in Donegal have issued a warning after multiple reports of scam calls claiming to be from a well-known broadband company.

During the call, the caller explains that the internet speed has been very slow recently and that the recipient of the call will be compensated by the company.

In one of the instances, the caller requested that that the recipient of the call set up a payment link on their mobile phone in order to facilitate this so called refund.

A garda spokesperson said: “The caller then took control of the mobile phone remotely.

“The caller, in most instances, simply requests financial/ bank card details so the money can be transferred.

“In all cases, these details were provided to the caller and money was then stolen from the bank accounts concerned.”

As a result, gardaí have issued the following advice:

  • Never provide your bank card or any type of financial details to a caller regardless of who they say they are.
  • Never click on a link that is sent to you via text message or email and do not agree to allow a caller to gain access to your phone remotely.
  • Should you ever receive a call and the caller is asking for personal or financial information, alarm bells should ring. Hang up! Obtain the company details from a verified source and contact them directly to enquire about the type of call you received.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Always be cautious. Do not be afraid of appearing rude by cutting a caller off. Protect yourself and your finances by being fraud aware.
