Gardaí used force 254 times this year

GARDAÍ in Donegal Division deployed force more than 250 times up to August this year.

Latest deployment figures from An Garda Síochána show gardaí in Donegal Division used force 254 times up to August. Force was deployed in Donegal Garda Division 33 times in the month of August alone.

The garda division with the highest use of force in August was DMR South Central at 135. It also had the highest year to date (up to August) use of force statistics at 931.

Nationally, the top reason use of force was deployed both in this year to August and in the month of August was to effect an arrest, at 5, 915 and and 776, respectively.

The top location for use of force deployment in August was the street (237), followed by the road (213) and the house (157).

Males made up the gender subjected to more force this year to date in August at 5,677, compared with 822 females.

Alcohol accounted for 4,596 use of force incidents up to August this year. This is juxtaposed with 2,228 incidents of use of force involving drugs.

Two hundred gardaí were injured during a use of force incident up to August this year. Twenty-two were in injured in the month of August.

Slightly more civilians were injured during use of force up to August (210). While in the month of August 29 were injured.

Gardaí deployed pepper spray 92 times in August and a total of 670 times year to date to August.
