Gardaí urge vigilance over bogus callers across county

PEOPLE with vulnerable family members are being urged to be vigilant as the brighter evenings can bring a rise in bogus callers and rogue trade activity.

That’s the warning from gardaí, who have said that at this time of year they tend to see an increase in the occurrence of incidents of bogus and rogue callers, calling to people’s homes under the pretence of offering a service such as power washing, painting and general maintenance jobs.

“These bogus callers prefer to target the more vulnerable and people who live alone. We advise people not to engage with such callers.”

The garda spokesperson advised anyone in doubt about a caller to their home not to open their door until they are confident that that person is known to them or has a genuine reason to be there.

“Use a chain lock for added security. These callers can be intimidating and often refuse to take no for an answer.

“Contact gardaí immediately should you encounter such a caller and try to give as much information as possible, description of person, registration number, and direction of travel.

“We ask everybody to be vigilant when out and about and report suspicious people/vehicles to us immediately.”
