TEN arrests were made in Donegal Division in the past week for driving under the influence. Six motorists were arrested for drug driving, while four arrests were made for drink driving.
The figures, released by gardaí, come as gardaí warn of a continued road traffic enforcement operation this festive season.
The operation, which began on Friday, November 29, will continue until Monday, January 6, 2025.
The Christmas period is one of the busiest on Irish roads. It is also one of the periods during which road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision.
A garda spokesperson said: “An Garda Síochána is appealing to all those that will be taking to the roads over the Christmas period to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention.
“We urge drivers to arrange a lift in advance if they are socialising over the Christmas period or to call a taxi. Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Gardaí said speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of collisions, serious injuries and fatalities on the roads. On Friday, Operation Slow Down will be conducted by by An Garda Síochaná.
“Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of collisions, serious injuries and fatalities on our roads. Despite regular reminders and enforcement efforts, hundreds of drivers are detected exceeding speed limits across the country every day.
“National Slow Down Days are about more than enforcement – they’re about saving lives. By driving within the speed limit, you’re reducing the likelihood of a collision and the severity of injuries should one occur.
“We’re asking all motorists to play their part; to check their speed regularly during their journey, and to remember speed limits are a maximum, not a target – adjust for weather, traffic and road conditions.
“Take responsibility for the safety of yourself, your passengers and others on the road,” said a garda spokesperson.
Meanwhile, the four garda district headquarters in Donegal will be open on a 24/7 basis throughout Christmas and New Year.
