MEMBERS of An Garda Síochána across the country will wear a purple ribbon on their uniforms tomorrow to mark the national day for domestic abuse awareness.
Go Purple Day, first launched in 2020, is a collaborative campaign between An Garda Síochána and local domestic abuse refuges.
The initiative aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse and highlight the wide range of supports available to those experiencing it.
This year’s event will take place on Friday, May 30 and a number of events will be held across the county to mark Go Purple Day.
Donegal Town Garda Station will host a coffee morning tomorrow between 11am and 1pm where information about domestic abuse services will also be distributed.
Gardaí from the Community Policing Unit in Letterkenny and Lifford will be out on the beat on Friday wearing their purple ribbons distributing information leaflets about domestic abuse support services that are available to the public.
Garda Catherine Callaghan will also be planting purple flowers in the flowerbeds outside Lifford Garda Station on Friday morning at 10am.
“Go Purple Day is about raising awareness and we are asking that you speak to one another about domestic abuse.
“Without realising, you might just give someone the crucial support they’ve needed to begin to share some of the fear they deal with alone,” a Garda spokesperson said.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse, please contact 999 or 112 or your local Garda station.
