Gardai set to hold 24hr national speed crackdown tomorrow

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) will launch a 24-hour nationwide speed enforcement operation for National Slow down Day on Monday, September 2nd, 2024.

This initiative comes in the wake of a troubling spate of road accidents across the country and especially Donegal, where four fatal road accidents have occurred within just over a week.

The primary goal of National Slow Down Day is to reinforce the dangers of speeding, encourage compliance with speed limits across the country, and discourage reckless driving behaviours that put lives at risk.

This urgent campaign is a direct response to the escalating number of road fatalities, highlighting the critical need for greater vigilance among drivers.

Statistics from last year paint a concerning picture, with 184 people losing their lives in 173 fatal collisions—a sharp 19% increase from the 154 deaths recorded in 2022.

The figures for 2024 are already alarming; by the end of June, over 70,000 fixed charge notices had been issued for speeding violations, averaging more than 375 drivers caught exceeding speed limits every day through Garda and GoSafe detections.
