THE Garda Representative Association has praised officers in Donegal following a safe conclusion to two incidents involving firearms.
Donegal’s GRA spokesperson Brendan O’Connor said it was a credit to his colleagues that no one was hurt on either occasion.
The first incident began on Wednesday and centred on a private dwelling in Letterkenny. A media blackout was put in place and details of what happened can only be reported now.
At approximately 5.45pm on Wednesday gardaí in Letterkenny responded to a domestic incident at a house. A teenage male had barricaded himself into the house and it was confirmed that he had access to firearms and ammunition.
No other person was in the dwelling.
At approximately 12.30am this morning the incident was resolved peacefully following a tactical intervention by the Garda Emergency Response Unit. No one was injured and a shotgun and ammunition were safely secured at the scene.
The teenager has been arrested and is undergoing medical assessment.
In a separate incident, shots were fired on Glenties’ Main Street. A gun was discharged several times shortly after midnight this morning. A man has been arrested.
Praising his colleagues, Garda Brendan O’Connor said, “My colleagues in Donegal, assisted by regional and national units, have brought two life threatening incidents to a safe conclusion with nobody hurt.
“That is a credit to the professionalism, skill and courage of the people I am proud to represent and speak on behalf of.
“Well done folks,” Garda O’Connor added.
