GARDAÍ have warned motorists of a crackdown on motoring offences across Donegal ahead of the bank holiday weekend.
A high-visability Garda operation will be in place throughout the county with checkpoints, speed checks and patrols.
The Garda warning comes in advance of the May bank holiday weekend when there is likely to be more traffic on the roads and increased risk of collisions.
Drivers are being urged to slow down, wear their seatbelt and not to drive under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.
“Do not use/hold your mobile phone while driving. Remember if you have been drinking you may not be safe to drive the morning after. Don’t risk it,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“As always, Gardaí will be out on the roads over the weekend conducting high visibility checkpoints and speed checks.
“We hope that everybody has a safe and an enjoyable weekend,” the spokesperson added.
The warning was echoed by recently retired Road Safety Officer with Donegal County Council, Brian O’Donnell.
“One life lost is one too many. Behind each of those figures is a life, a family, a friend, a whole community- the ripple effect of a person losing their life impacts those around them forever more.
“In the last number of years in Donegal we have had multiple tragedies and whole communities that have been left shattered.
“It is soul destroying and it is heart-breaking. To pick up the pieces and carry on after that is very difficult,” he said.
