WITH the darker evenings now setting in, gardaí are reminding the public of the importance of securing homes and keeping them well lit.
A garda spokesperson emphasised the need to “lock up and light up” and issued the following advice.
“Ensure that your property is well secured at all times,” a garda spokesperson said.
“Leave some lights on inside and outside, even if you are not going to be at home.
“Do not keep large amounts of cash in your house.
“If you have valuables, such as jewellery, which you must keep in your home, please ensure that you have a good quality safe affixed to a wall to store them in.
“Take a record of and photograph any expensive jewellery that you have in your possession.”
Gardaí urged the public to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood without delay.
“Try to include descriptions of vehicles, people and direction of travel if at all possible,” a spokesperson continued.
“Do not allow anyone access to your home unless you know them or you are confident that they are genuine and have a valid reason to be there.
“Use a chain-lock on your door for extra security.”
Gardaí also reminded the public to check in on their elderly or vulnerable neighbours and family members.
“Alert us if they need our assistance or advice,” a spokesperson said.
“Our Divisional Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Fergus Mc Groary is available to advise in relation to security measures for homes and businesses.
“He may be contacted at Letterkenny Garda Station on 074-9167100.”
