The warning comes after reports from various parts of the county of the man masquerading as a priest. Speaking to the Donegal News, Crime Prevention Officer,
Sergeant Paul Wallace to report any suspicious activity in their areas.
“This male appears to be masquerading as a roman catholic priest, calling to houses seeking money for mission purposes. Investigating Gardai have reason to suspect that this person is not a priest and has criminal intent in mind,” he said.
While an accurate description of the man is not available gardai believe he may be driving a modern English registered car which may be white in colour. A number of reports have originated along the Donegal / Fermanagh border.
Sergeant Wallace issued the following advice.
“We would ask members in the community to discreetly monitor activity in the vicinity of older persons homes. A quick visit / call can allay fears if something untoward is occurring. The noting of a vehicle registration number and passing on to local Gardai can be of immense benefit to investigating Gardai,” he said.
“We are into the summer season now and there will bean increase of activity in rural communities, with visitors coming home, people gardening and carrying out various tasks but it must be borne in mind the criminally minded will be moving about as well and ‘praying’ on the most isolated and vulnerable in our community,” Sergeant Wallace added.
