Gardaí insist road safety message not being driven home

By Louise Doyle

GARDAÍ in Donegal have said they do not believe the message of road safety is being driven home, following 16 arrests during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend policing operation.

The An Garda Síochána enforcement operation over the Bank Holiday weekend commenced at 7am on Thursday, April 17 and it concluded at 7am on Tuesday, April 22.

Gardaí were out on the roads across the Donegal Division over the course of the weekend, conducting checkpoints, patrols and speed checks.

Ten drug-driving arrests and six drink driving related arrests were made across the division during the five-day operation.

Fixed Charged Penalty Notices were issues for various offences and a number of vehicles were seized, gardaí have said.

A garda spokesperson said: “A large range of road traffic offences were detected over the course of the weekend. Various other detections were made in relation to speeding, no tax, no insurance, no driving licence, bald tyres, dangerous driving and a disqualified driver was also detected behind the wheel.

“The aim of this campaign was the protection of vulnerable road users, and the reduction in fatal and serious collisions through high-visibility roads policing and strict enforcement.

“Thankfully, we did not have any fatal road traffic collisions in the Donegal Division over the course of the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend but given the amount of detections in relation to a range of road traffic offences it is obvious that the road safety message is just not hitting home with some people.

“Sixteen arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs is a worrying figure. Even one arrest for driving while under the influence is one too high.”

Gardaí are continuing to appeal to all drivers to slow down, drive with care, and never to drive while under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.
