Garda station to get Gaeltacht status

GARDA Commissioner Drew Harris is in the process of designating Letterkenny Garda Station as a Gaeltacht serving station.

Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn revealed the development at the latest Donegal Joint Policing Committee meeting.

What this means is that if a person has a complaint or query they wish to issue through the medium of the Irish language they will be able to do so.

Gardaí at the station will undertake training in this regard over the next year or two.

Speaking at Donegal Joint Policing Committee’s latest meeting, held online, Chief Superintendent Chief Supt McGinn said: “Donegal is a Gaeltacht area. The Commissioner will be dedicating Letterkenny Garda Station as a bilingual station. This means that anyone wishing to make a complaint at the station can also do so in Irish.

“We are going to build up our competencies and abilities in this area,” she said.

Chief Supt McGinn thanked Deputy Joe McHugh for his support on the issue.

“To have Letterkenny as one of the leading flagships as a Garda training centre is important.”

The move was broadly welcomed by councillors and members of Donegal Joint Policing Committee.
