TODAY marks the 16th anniversary of the passing of Garda Robert McCallion.
Garda McCallion, originally from Swinford, Co Mayo was serving in Letterkenny when he tragically lost his life in the line of duty.
On the morning of March 26, 2009, Garda McCallion and two other colleagues responded to a call at Tara Court in Letterkenny.
While dealing with the situation, the gardaí observed a car approaching at speed.
Garda McCallion was struck by the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.
He was conveyed to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where, on April 7, 2009, he succumbed to his injuries.
Born on August 9, 1979, Garda McCallion worked with Corrib Oil before joining An Garda Síochána on February 7, 2005.
Honouring a family legacy, he followed in the footsteps of his father, brother, uncles, and cousin, who all served in An Garda Síochána.
Paying tribute to their late colleague on his 16th anniversary, An Garda Síochána Donegal said Garda McCallion is never far from the thoughts of all those who had the pleasure of working with him.
“May Robbie’s gentle soul rest in peace,” a spokesperson said.
