A man who killed a Garda officer when he rammed into his patrol car has appeared in court charged with dangerous driving.
Martin McDermott (34) of Abbey Park in Manorcunningham was brought before Letterkenny District Court today following his arrest on Tuesday night.
He faces six charges arising out of an incident at Delta View in Manorcunningham.
McDermott was jailed for seven years in 2011 for killing Garda Gary McLoughlin.
Aged 29 at the time, McDermott was speeding towards Derry when he steered his stolen Opel Astra into Garda McLoughlin’s patrol car. The 24-year-old officer from Ballinamore in Leitrim died in hospital 24 hours after the horrific incident.
There was uproar when McDermott escaped from the low security open prison at Loughan House in Cavan eight months into his seven year sentence. He eventually served four years before walking free from Midlands Prison.
McDermott, who has over 90 previous convictions, was back in the dock today following an incident late on Tuesday night.
