Gaoth Dobhair woman braves the shave in aid of a great local charity

GAOTH DOBHAIR woman Kathleen Griffin has taken control of her hair loss and has braved the shave in a bid to raise much needed funds for local charity Eitiltí and Seirbhísí Ailse Dhún na nGall.

In September 2022 Kathleen was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Luckily she only had to wait four weeks for surgery, to which the outcome was very positive.

Although Kathleen will make a full recovery, she has to undergo chemotherapy over the next 18 weeks.

Unfortunately Kathleen was told due to the chemotherapy she would lose her hair.

Speaking to the Donegal News, she revealed how she intended to take control of her hair loss.

“I just made the decision I wasn’t going to lose my hair, I was going to take control of it.

“I wanted to raise awareness and raise money for the great charity we have here in the North West, Eitiltí and Seirbhísí Ailse Dhún na nGall.

“They have helped me so much when I needed to get up and down to Dublin.

“It is a great charity and I am so proud I have been able to help them,” she said.

Eitiltí and Seirbhísí Ailse Dhún na nGall (Donegal Cancer Flights and Services) provides return flights from Donegal Airport to Dublin for patients and their carers/family members.

They also provide a taxi service for clients attending appointments in Letterkenny, Altnagelvin, Sligo, Roscommon and Galway.

They offer a free counselling service to cancer clients and their family members, information evenings on cancer-related topics by healthcare professionals and pampering days where clients are treated to a range of free therapies and treatments in the relaxed atmosphere of Ionad Naomh Pádraig.

As the clippers went on, Kathleen’s friends and family gathered in Ionad Naomh Pádraig to show their support.

So far Kathleen’s head shave has raised over a whopping €14,000 for the local charity.

Kathleen thanked the parish of Gaoth Dobhair for being behind her all the way.

“I feel privileged that they have donated the amount of money they have for such a great cause,” she said.
