Gaoth Dobhair sports clubs to share €50,000 funding

Gaoth Dobhair Golf Club and Chumann Peil Cheiltigh Ghaoth Dobhair benefit from more than €40,000 grant support
Minister Joe McHugh has welcomed grants of about €50,000 to support two clubs in Gaoth Dobhair.

“This is about supporting clubs and organisations that do their bit for the Irish language and for the local Gaeltacht community,” Minister McHugh said.

“Tá súil agam go dtabharfaidh an t-airgead seo an deis don chlub an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn I measc na baill, an pobal áitiúil agus do thurasóirí sa cheantair.”

A grant of up to €33,321, or 60% of the overall cost, whichever is less, has been approved by the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht for Chumann Peil Cheiltigh Ghaoth Dobhair.  The money will go towards the costs of buying and erecting a fence and ball stop nets.

Minister McHugh said: “This will improve the ground at Gaoth Dobhair.  It will also make it safer, encourage more players into the club and all of this will be done in the context of promoting the Irish language.”

The funding announcement included €13,000 for Gaoth Dobhair Golf Club to carry out work on its facilities.

Minister McHugh said: “A grant of about €13,000 will go a long way to support Gaoth Dobhair Golf Club’s efforts to create better facilities and all of that should be seen in the context of the work it does to promote the Irish language.

“The club draws people from the local community, all ages, visitors and tourists in the Gaeltacht and it’s great to see it getting such support.”

The grant of up to €13,117 or 60% of the overall cost, whichever is less, was sanctioned by the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht.
