Gaoth Dobhair pupils on way to World Robotics Championship

THE Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair Robotics Team has achieved a remarkable goal by winning the VEX Robotics All-Ireland Championship which was held in MTU, Cork recently.

Their win means they will now represent Ireland at the prestigious VEX Robotics World Championship which will takes place in Dallas, Texas from April 25 to 27 and are now fundraising to get there.

Under the guidance of their teacher, Keith Ó Fearraigh the team consisting of: Yanto Carrothers, Mollaí Ní Shearcaigh, Muireann Ní hÁicéid, Cerry Magner, Pádraig Mac Suibhne, Áine Ní Fhearraigh and Corrthaigh Ó Dochartaigh are looking forward to their trip to Dallas. They won the eight qualifying rounds and were top of leader board of 24 robots.

They were awarded the National Champions and also won the Best Innovate Award and they came second in the Robot Skills.

This is the second year for the Pobal Scoil to take part in this competition.

The VEX Robotics Competition provides secondary school students with an exciting engineering challenge presented in the form of a game students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, build innovative robots and compete year-round.

In addition to learning valuable engineering skills, students gain life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, communication, collaboration, project management, and critical thinking.

The VEX Robotics Competition prepares students to become future innovators, with 95 per cent of participants reporting an increased interest in STEM subject areas and pursuing STEM-related careers.

In order to help fund their trip to the USA for the World Championships the school has set up a Go Fund Me page with a goal of €10,000.

They estimate that their total budget for this event is approximately €25,000. Any contribution, whether large or small, will make a significant impact on their ability to attend the championship.

They are appealing to companies to contribute and assist in their fundraising.

Their Go Fund Me page states: “We are reaching out to seek your support and sponsorship for our team’s participation in this global event.

“The World Championship is a unique opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, creativity, and passion for robotics.”

They then list the benefits for those sponsoring the team to get to the World Championships.
