LOTS of locals from Churchill and beyond braved the chilly waters of Gartan Lake on New Year’s Day to take part in the annual Gartan ‘Big Dip’, held in support of St Columba’s Church, Churchill.
The Gartan Outdoor Education and Training Centre (OETC) kindly provided the use of the boathouse, offering swimmers a warm space to change, along with hot drinks and soup afterwards.
Despite the cold conditions, there was plenty of fun and laughter in the water, with the lake temperature a brisk four degrees.
Safety cover was provided by the Irish Red Cross, whose volunteers were on hand throughout the event.
Rev Adrian Dorrian thanked the organisers and everyone who came along to support the event.
A lively countdown led by Liz Forrest signalled the start, followed by a spirited dash into the lake, creating plenty of splashing and cheer to welcome the New Year.
