Donegal boss Rory Gallagher says Mayo will present a huge challenge to his team when the sides lock horns in MacCumhaill Park on Sunday.

Donegal have not had a great record against Mayo since they beat them in the All-Ireland Final back in 2012.

Mayo have since knocked them out of the All-Ireland series at the quarter-finals stage on two occasions, while they also beat them in the league in Castlebar in 2013.

The sides did draw in McHale Park last season, but Mayo ended up going further in the Championship, and Gallagher feels they could have beaten Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final last year.

Stephen Rochford is the new Mayo manager, and while they are yet to pick up any points in the league, Gallagher does not think they will be overly concerned about their form.

“Mayo have very much held the upper hand of our fixtures over the last couple of years in both the league and the championship,” said Gallagher.

“They are under new management now and they have new blood in, so I’m sure they have moved on.

“I’d say they were one of the last teams getting started, so I’d say they are not overly worried about things.

“It’s a huge challenge for us. They have definitely been one of the top three teams in the country over the last few years, and they should have beaten Dublin the first day last year.”
