Gaeil Leitir Ceanainn launch James Frain Cup 2026

CLG Ghaeil Leitir Ceanainn launched their annual senior girls football competition, the James Frain Cup, at their clubroom at Pairc na nGael last Wednesday night. Coaches and players from the participating clubs; CLG Ghaeil Leitir CeanainnBaile na nGalloglach (Milford), CLG Bun Cranncha and CLG Beart attended the launch.

In 2025, the inaugural James Frain Cup was hosted by Gaeil Leitir Ceanainn to provide senior ladies teams with a meaningful pre-season competition. The goal is to help senior ladies teams prepare for the LGFA All County League starting at the end of March.  CLG Bun Cranncha won the cup in 2025 and are back looking to retain the title in 2026.

At the launch, chairperson of the Gaeil Leitir Ceanainn Ladies Board Ursula Gallagher spoke of the importance of girls and ladies football to the health and wellbeing of female members of the competing clubs.  Girls and ladies football at CLG Ghaeil Leitir Ceanainn, and indeed many other clubs across the county, is growing rapidly and it’s important that we have competitive games for the girls to play.

James Frain is one of the four founding members of Letterkenny Gaels GAA Club and as current Vice Chairperson of the club, he is still actively involved in the day to day running of the Glebe based outfit. James praised the great work being done by the LGFA and Donegal LGFA/GAA clubs in ladies football across the county. With the high drop off in sport, it is important that every effort is made to have teams and competitions for girls and ladies. James thanked the other clubs for accepting the invitation to take part in the competition and wished them all good luck.

The cup will be played in a round robin group format with all teams playing three group games.  The top two teams will then play off in the James Frain Cup Final on Sunday 22nd March 2026.
