Gaeil Fhanada pursuing ‘sledging’ matter

By Frank Craig

Ghaeil Fhánada have decided to bring their ‘sledging’ grievance from last Sunday night’s IFC semi-final loss to Naomh Columba to the Donegal Competitions Controls Committee (CCC).

An allegation of what Gaeil Fhánada describe as ‘profound verbal abuse’ has been made against a Naomh Columba player who they say targeted one of their own men during the contest at MacCumhaill Park.

Following the Glencolmcille side’s 4-11 2-9 victory in Ballybofey, an incident sparked on the stand side of the field which resulted in both sides quickly becoming embroiled in a physical confrontation.

The matter was eventually brought under control. Afterwards, however, Gaeil Fhánada boss Aidan McAteer expressed his displeasure with an alleged comment, which he he says left one of his players in a state of real distress at the half-time interval.

CCC secretary Ed Byrne has confirmed to the Donegal News that the referee’s report from the game is now with him and that correspondence from the Fanad club on the matter is now also on his desk. Both will be discussed at the next meeting of the CCC.

A club statement was released by Gaeil Fhánada yesterday afternoon. It read: “CLG Ghaeil Fhánada wish to confirm that an incident of profound verbal abuse against one of our players was reported to team management at half time during the Intermediate Championship semi final on Sunday, September 18th.

“While club officials reported this allegation to the referee and sideline officials, the club have subsequently made the decision to correspond with Donegal CCC in relation to the incident.

“The Gaeil Fhánada player in question has the unequivocal support of the club. No further comment will be made from the club at this time”.
