GAA: Winning start for champions in Donegal Senior Football Championship

Eunan's Rory Kavanagh gets away from Ardara's Peter Oliver McNelis.

By Harry Walsh

THE opening round of games in the Donegal Senior Football Championship failed to throw up any major surprises.

Reigning champions St Eunan’s got their title defence off to the best possible start, winning 2-10 to 0-07 in Ardara yesterday, with Lee McMonagle (penalty) and Conor Gibbons grabbing the goals.
The other game in Group 2 saw Naomh Conaill overcome the challenge of Dungloe (2-14 1-08) with first half goals from Eunan Doherty and Leon Thompson setting them off on the winning path.

In Group 1 Glenswilly’s old knack of coming out on top in tight, tense affairs again came to prominence against Gaoth Dobhair (1-10 to 1-08) in Magheragallon on Saturday night while Division One basement side Malin were held to a draw at home to MacCumhaills (1-13 to 0-16) yesterday afternoon.

In Group 4, Kilcar brushed aside Naomh Muire’s challenge (2-13 to 0-08) with Darragh O’Donnell and Patrick McBrearty raising green flags while late points from Kevin ‘Wappa’ McMenamin and Daireann Gibson fired Termon to a crucial championship victory over a Hugh McFadden-inspired Killybegs at the Burn Road on Saturday evening.

In Group 3 St Michael’s won a one-sided affair against Cloughaneely (2-11 to 0-07) while a Michael Doherty inspired Four Masters edged past the challenge of Glenfin on Saturday evening.
