Further protest meeting to save Donegal Education Centre’s relocation

A FURTHER protest meeting against the removal of Donegal Education Centre from Donegal Town to Letterkenny will take place tomorrow.

The public meeting will be held in The Abbey Hotel, Dongeal Town, at 8pm and comes amid a fresh call from the committee calling on
Education Minister, Helen McEntee to intervene in the controversy.

In a statement issued on behalf of the ‘Save Donegal Education Centre Committee, Councillor Jimmy Brogan said the meeting is to inform teachers in Donegal and the general public on the campaign to keep an important government service in Donegal Town, and save the jobs of the administrative staff.

“Donegal Town has suffered from a lack of investment over many years and the closing of the Education Centre will directly affect the progress and prosperity of the Town. The Education Centre is proposed to move to the mountain top area of Letterkenny which is already choked with traffic, and we have invited local politicians to join us for a discussion on these matters and why Donegal Town has been
continuously neglected for investment over many years,” the statement reads.

“The staff union, FORSA, have now engaged with the WRC who are attempting to broker an agreement and time must be given for this process to happen before any more plans are made to move the centre. It’s unfair that the staff are expected to travel a possible three hours per day for between three and five days per week and cover the cost of travel themselves, without any additional allowances been offered, this is unacceptable.”

The supporters of the Donegal Education Centre say they are disappointed at the lack of action by the Minister of Education, Helen McEntee, and are still hoping that she will step in and postpone the proposed move of the centre, until she has had time to carry out a full investigation of the circumstances of the proposed move.
