Cassidy, who is originally from Derry, was charged with having an explosive substance as well as possessing 87 twelve gauge shotgun cartridges.

He was initially charged at last week’s sitting of the court, but was remanded in custody to today where a bail application was to be made.

However, his solicitor Mr Eugene Burns from Derry, told Judge Paul Kelly that he was not ready to make a bail application at this moment.

Inspector David Kelly told the court that, if any application was made, he wanted the name of any independent surety in advance so he could do the necessary “background checks.”

Inspector Kelly added: “There may be other matters arising.”

Judge Kelly remanded Cassidy in custody to appear at next Monday’s sitting of the court.

A female soldier, who was arrested during the same operation, was released without charge last Wednesday night after being questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station.
