Funston to step down as Bonagee boss after cup run

MICHAEL Funston has informed Bonagee United that he will step down as their first-team manager after their involvement in the FAI Junior Cup concludes.

Funston was appointed to the role last May following the departure of Packie Mailey.

Funston, who came up through the ranks with Bonagee, was a key player in recent years before being struck down with a cruciate injury.

He was willing to take on the manager’s role and Bonagee were competitive in the Donegal Junior League Premier Division.

However, some poor results after Christmas proved costly as Letterkenny Rovers won the title.

Bonagee are set to conclude their domestic season on Wednesday against Keadue.

The Dry Arch side are then due to face Rathkeale in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup.

Funston was at the helm as Bonagee claimed a great 2-0 win over Clonmel Celtic in Tipperary last week.

The former Finn Harps star will see out the remainder of the FAI Junior Cup campaign.

However, there will be a new manager in place when Bonagee begin life in the League of Ireland third tier later this year.
