HUNDREDS are expected to gather in the Sacred Heart Church in Carndonagh today to say their final goodbyes to Tiernan Doherty-Kelly, the 18-year-old who died in a collision near Buncrana at the weekend.
The collision occurred on the R244 (Mountain Road) at Ballinlough shortly after 5am on Sunday.
The Carndonagh teen was the driver and sole occupant of the car and was fatally injured in the collision.
His death has been met with deep sadness in Carndonagh and tributes have been pouring in for the popular teenager who played with his local soccer and GAA clubs.
A spokesperson from CLG Charn Domhnaigh said: “The tragic passing of Tiernan Doherty-Kelly leaves us all at a loss as we try to get our heads around the events. From a very young age it has been our privilege to watch Tiernan play football and hurling with skill and determination for our club and even more so in the last year as he had come through to start playing adult football for the club and showed us what we all knew, that he was a star. Tiernan was a shining example for our younger players and always greeted everyone with a smile. Whilst our loss is immense it’s nothing compared to that of his family and friends. We extend our deepest condolences to the Doherty and Kelly families at this time and our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
A spokesperson from Carndonagh FC said: “Everyone associated with Carndonagh FC are devastated as we learned of the tragic death of our club player Tiernan Doherty-Kelly (TK). We are totally heartbroken for his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents Kevin and Louise, brothers Kyrin, Cohen and Kegan and the extended Doherty and Kelly families at this devastating time.”
Requiem Mass is set to take place today at 1.30pm in the Sacred Heart Church, Carndonagh followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
Shocked and saddened saddened by his passing are his loving parents Kevin and Louise.
He will be sadly missed by his younger brothers Kyrin, Cohen, and Keegan.
He is deeply cherished by his broken-hearted girlfriend Kaylah, his grandparents Sean and Maureen, his aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, friends and neighbours.
Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 4.30am and 5.30am are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí,” a spokesperson said.
