Funeral to take place in Wales of Gaoth Dobhair native, Joe Doherty

THE death occurred peacefully at his home on Friday, January 30 of Joe Doherty (92), Colbren Square, Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Wales.

Originally from Magheraclogher, Derrybeg, he was a son of the late Micí Eoghain Eoin and Kitty Eoin Eoghain, Doherty and was born on January 12, 1934.
Like so many young men of the area at the time Joe went to Scotland in search of work. After a few years he moved to Wales and it was here he met Sylvia, his future wife, and they were married on July 29, 1964.

Although he emigrated as a young man in search of work and opportunity, Gaoth Dobhair always remained close to Joe’s heart. He spoke often of his childhood years, the people he grew up with, and the strong sense of community that shaped him.

He maintained strong links with his birth place, returning whenever possible and keeping in regular contact with family and friends at home. He took great pride in his roots and was always glad to hear news from Gaoth Dobhair, following local events and sharing fond memories of times gone by.
His passing has brought deep sadness to his family in Ireland and Wales and to his many friends who valued his friendship and companionship. A fluent Irish speaker, he managed to learn some Welsh language.

His Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 27 in the Sacred Heart RC., Church, Ystradgynlais at 11.15am and he will be laid to rest afterwards in the Old Carmel Cemetery, Gwaun Cae Gurwen at 1pm.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, also by his brothers, John and Mícheál, sisters, Bridie, Sarah, Nellie, Maggie and Máire.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia, children, Astra and Joseph, daughter-in-law, Claire, grandchildren, Natasha, Dylan, Kieran, Niamh, Pearce and Grace, great-grandchildren, Riley, Rónán, Erin, Darci and Declan, brothers, Condy Doherty (Magheragallon) and Eoghan (Swindon), sisters, Síle (London) and Rosie (Magheraclogher).

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
