Patrick Gallagher
DEEPLY regretted is the recent death of Patrick Gallagher, Strand Road, Bunbeg.
The most senior citizen of the parish of Gaoth Dobhair, he passed away peacefully at his home.
Born on the 6 March, 1926, he died short of four weeks from his 100th year. He was affectionately and better known locally as Patrick Phaidí Antoin and was originally from Lower Dore.
Patrick was born in Corveen, Derrybeg and at seven years he was hired out with families in the locality. He spent a number of seasons hired out with a family in Cró na gCúig Fhia and afterwards with a family in Carrick, Derrybeg.
He later went to work in Scotland and England and later in Dublin. He returned home and lived in Lower Dore. In 2011 he moved to Strand Road, Magheraclogher to be beside his niece, Bernie Sweeney.
Patrick grew up in an era very different from today, shaped by hard work, strong community values and deep respect for family and neighbours. He had witnessed enormous changes in society, technology and everyday living. Yet he remained grounded in the simple principles of honesty, kindness and respect to others.
Those who knew him speak warmly of his good nature, his sense of humour, and the wisdom he shared through stories of times gone by.
He was a hugely intelligent individual and loved to read books relating to the old westerns. He also loved to watch old western films on television.
He had a vast knowledge of genealogy and was a great source for those tracing their family history. He could recall many events which occurred in the area spanning many years.
Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church, Meenaweal, and he was laid to rest afterwards in Magheragallon cemetery. The celebrant was Fr. Brian Ó Feraraigh and he was assisted by Fr. Seán Ó Gallchóir.
The lessons were read by Collette and Roseann, while the prayers of the faithful were read by Pat Bán, Mark, Séamus and Ruairí.
Items representing Patrick’s life, which included his rosary beads and a western book, were brought to the altar by Caitríona, Siofra, and Aoibhinn. The soloist was Sabrina Sweeney and she was accompanied on the guitar by Pat Duffy. She sang the sad ballad ‘Thíos Cois na Trá’ as the remains were leaving the church.
Predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Bridget, sisters, Rose, Bridget, Mary and Ann, brothers, Charlie, Anton and John. He will be sadly missed by his sister, Madge who lives in Scotland, nieces and nephews.
