THERE was sadness across Donegal following the passing of Very Reverend, Father Michael Conaghan at the weekend.
Fr Conaghan passed away peacefully at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Letterkenny on Saturday.
Born in 1935, he received his primary education in Castlederg National School and his secondary education in St Columb’s College, Derry.
He studied for the Priesthood at Heythrope College, England before he was ordained a priest in 1965.
He then joined the Salvatorian Missions in Tanzania, Africa.
Upon his return to Donegal he served in many parishes across the county.
He started as a Curate in Drumkeen in 1976, before taking a position in Holy Cross College, Falcarragh in 1978.
He then continued his work as a Curate in Ballyshannon from 1979 to 1983 and Creeslough from 1986 to 1994.
During this time he also served as a Chaplain at Letterkenny University Hospital.
He then served as a Parish Priest in Kilmacrennan from 1994 before his retirement in 2010.
He is deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, sister-in-law, cousins, extended family, friends, Bishop Alan and priest brothers of the Diocese of Raphoe.
Requiem Mass takes place today, Monday, in St. Columba’s Church, Kilmacrennan at 12 noon followed by burial in St Patrick’s Graveyard, Crossroads, Killygordon.
