Tributes are flooding in for well-known Letterkenny photographer Dermot Donohue, who sadly passed away at the weekend.
Dermot Donohue was a familiar name having captured special occasions for Donegal families for many years.
From his early days when he opened up his first studio on Letterkenny’s Main Street, beside Dillon’s Supermarket, on October 21, 1978, Dermot was at the forefront of photography in Donegal, building up a hugely loyal customer base.
Specialising in portrait and wedding photography for thirty-six years, Dermot moved on to pastures new in 2014 with a new business venture.
Dermot then put his focus on corporate work, specialising in 3D virtual tours, drone footage and corporate head shots.
Many took to Facebook to remember the well-known photographer and to pay their respects.
One post read, “Sad to hear the news about Dermot. Many people in Letterkenny and surrounds have no doubt got a family photo or two taken by him in their homes. Rest in Peace Dermot, a gentleman”.
Letterkenny Blues and Roots Festival also took to their Facebook to pay tribute to the blues fanatic.
“We are devastated to hear about the passing of our good friend, committee member and one of the original founders of the Letterkenny Jazz and Blues Festival, Dermot Donohue. A great man, a blues fanatic and a dynamic performer with an energy unsurpassed in the Irish Blues scene today. Our condolences go out to his family and friends at this very sad time,” a spokesperson said.
Dermot passed away peacefully in the gentle care of the staff in the Donegal Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.
He is predeceased by his parents Roseleen and Jerry and is survived by his wife Rosemarie, daughter Eva, sons Rory, Julian and Christopher, daughter in law Amanda, son in law Joe, grandson Harry, his brothers and sisters.
Dermot’s funeral will take place on Tuesday morning, January 31 at 11am in St. Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny followed by cremation in Lakeland’s Crematorium, County Cavan, at 3:30pm.
