A LETTERKENNY based doctor has died and her husband remains in a critical condition following a crash in Sligo in the early hours of Monday morning.
Dr Mahbuba Akhter was travelling with her husband Dr Mohammad Hossain Farooq and their two children when they were involved in a single-car collision on the N15 toward Donegal.
Dr Akhter was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, while Dr Farooq remains in critical condition in intensive care at Sligo University Hospital following surgery.
Their two sons, the driver, who is in his 20s and the third passenger a teenager, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at SUH.
Dr Farooq, originally from Bangladesh, is a senior doctor at Letterkenny University Hospital’s Emergency Department.
A fundraiser was set up by his friend and colleague, Dr Moe Rashed. The pair began working together at LUH in 2022.

Dr Farooq who was critically injured in the collision.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Dr Rashed said staff have been left shocked by the news, with many travelling to Sligo to visit their colleague.
He also spoke of Dr Farooq’s dedication to LUH and the unbreakable bond shared by staff in the Emergency Department.
“ED is more or less a family,” said Dr Rashed.
“As a colleague, friend and beloved member of the community, Dr Farooq has always been there for others in their time of need. Now, he and his family need our support more than ever.”
So far, the fundraiser has raised over €40,000, which will go directly towards supporting Dr Farooq and his children.
