Funding secured to progress new Garda Station in Carndonagh

Funding has been secured to progress a new garda station in Carndonagh under the National Development Plan (NDP).

Announcing details of his department’s spend for Budget 2026, Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, said Carndonagh is one of two towns identified for funding under the National Development Plan to progress the development of a new garda station – the other being Castletroy in Limerick.

Welcoming the announcement, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said: “I have been a long-standing advocate of this project and the delivery of a new garda station in Carndonagh will give people of Carndonagh and surrounding areas a further sense of safety.”

“This is a welcome and important decision for the town of Carndonagh. I have been liaising with Minister O’Callaghan on this matter to make sure that Carndonagh is prioritised in the National Development Plan. A new garda station in Carndonagh is crucial for policing in North Inishowen, and for our gardai so that they have the services necessary to carry out their job well. Carndonagh is such a central area from a policing perspective and it’s only right that we have a new, modern garda station to reflect that,” he added.

“I’d like to thank Minister O’Callaghan for his commitment to this funding under the national development plan announced in the budget last week. Thanks also to Cllr Martin McDermott for his ongoing work in relation to this project.

“In order for the project to move forward, a site for the new garda station needs to be secured and I will press for prompt action now to ensure that we see this funding used to secure a site and have the project progress,” the Donegal Minister of State said.
