THERE was a slight improvement in recent days in the condition of a popular young Stranorlar man who is fighting for his life in a Spanish hospital.
Oisin Merritt (19), a talented young Finn Harps reserve player, sustained serious head injures after he fell from a balcony while on holiday in Mallorca, three weeks ago.
According to a spokesman for the family, brain pressure readings had reduced to more stable numbers in recent days.
However, Finn Harps board member, Mr Aidan Campbell, stressed that there was a “long way to go” in his recovery and he remains in a coma.
“Doctors will again look at the pressure readings on his brain over the coming days with a view to taking him out of the coma. “However, this is a very tricky process, and his family are keen to stress that his condition could change at any time.
“While the reduction in pressure is good news, there is a long way to go,” he said.
Mr Campbell took the opportunity to thank the community in Donegal for supporting the various fund-raising efforts for Oisin and his family.
More events are planned in the coming days, including a table quiz in The Millview Bar, Stranorlar, tonight (Thursday) at 9:30 pm.
Family members, including his parents Garry and Rose, have flown to the Mediterranean island to be at his bedside.
The former St Columba’s College pupil is an extremely popular young man in the Twin Towns and had celebrated his birthday last month.
The talented young footballer is on the books of Finn Harps and has played for the club’s reserve team in the Ulster Senior League this season having previously turned out for their Under-19s.
He has played Gaelic football for Sean MacCumhaills and was on the Donegal Vocational Schools panel that reached the All-Ireland Vocational Schools final in 2012.
