A POIGNANT fun run and walk held last month in memory of a young local mother who died just days after giving birth has raised thousands for two local charities.

The event was held in Killygordon to remember Melissa Hamilton (nee Connolly) who was just 34 when she gave birth to her third daughter Grace in September, 2011.

Melissa, from Sallywood, Killygordon, had been told just six days previously that she had breast cancer.

Doctors at Letterkenny General Hospital thought it best for Melissa to give birth to her baby after just 28 weeks.

She had prepared herself to battle the cancer which had spread rapidly to her liver.

However, just eight days later on September 8, Melissa suddenly took a turn for the worse and passed away at the hospital.

A group of local people got together, along with Melissa’s husband Seamus, and decided to organise a happy, healthy event in her memory, while raising much needed money for two worthy charities.

As a result, hundreds turned up on the day and, as a result, €2,000 was raised and was divided equally between the local branch of the St Vincent de Paul and The Cochlear Implant Services.

Following the run, there was a range of family fun activities as well as the Melissa Hamilton Memorial Cup girls blitz at the Red Hughs GAA grounds.

The organising committee took the opportunity to thank all parents and ladies who baked and made sandwiches for the event.

To DJ Marty Temple for the great music, the Irish dancers who gave a great display of dance. To Gerard Gallagher, Joe Carlin, Mark Connolly and the vintage club who helped with the 5K event.

To Maura and her team who helped with the Girls underage Blitz, and to anyone who helped in any way to make this event such a huge success.

A final thanks to the organising committee: Seamus Hamilton, Diane, Kathy, Marie, Alice, Andy, Charlie, Lisa, Anita and Kieran.
